Art in the landscape transforms ordinary outdoor spaces into emotionally resonant, visually dynamic environments. At Opulands, we believe sculpture and structure should interact with light, nature, and architecture—creating spaces where each element elevates the others.

Whether it’s a subtle garden accent or a monumental installation, integrating art into the landscape invites a deeper, more personal experience with your surroundings.

Sculpture, Soul, and Space — Thoughtfully Integrated

art and landscape design
At Opulands, we believe that art belongs not just on walls or in galleries—but in gardens, courtyards, and outdoor rooms, where light and shadow, season and scale, create an ever-evolving experience.

We have deep experience in placing artwork of all sizes into landscapes, from intimate bronze sculptures nestled among ornamental grasses to monumental works requiring cranes, concrete footings, and multi-disciplinary coordination. Whether a subtle accent or a commanding centerpiece, each piece of art deserves a landscape that complements its story and enhances its presence.

Designing with Purpose: Art in Landscape

Incorporating art in landscape is more than setting a sculpture on the lawn—it’s a curated act of design, balance, and emotional resonance. Every piece must feel at home in its environment, supported by thoughtful surroundings.

We consider:

Sightlines & Scale

How is the piece viewed from patios, entryways, or even interior windows? We align art placement with natural visual flow.

Light, Shadow & Seasonal Movement

We study how the artwork responds to natural light at different times of day and year. The result is a dynamic experience that changes with the seasons.

Planting Composition

Foliage should enhance—not compete with—the art. Through layering textures and tones, we frame the piece naturally.

Hardscape & Pedestal Design

Stone bases, lighting, and circulation paths create grounding and flow. These details ensure the piece feels intentional in its setting.

Security & Longevity

We address footings, anchoring, and access for maintenance—balancing beauty with stability.

Understanding Scale: From Garden Moments to Monumental Installations

Sculptures come in many forms, and scale determines both visual impact and technical planning.

Small-Scale Works

Garden accents like urns, fountains, or small statues are best placed early in the design process. These intimate pieces allow for rich interaction with surrounding plants and create focal points without altering the terrain.

Large-Scale Installations

Bolder pieces demand greater coordination—from feasibility studies and structural plans to crane scheduling and custom footings. We’ve completed installations that required:
  • Craning over homes
  • Concrete piers for support
  • Engineering reviews and steel anchor systems
  • Collaborative planning with artists and fabricators
Even when the logistics are complex, the aesthetics always lead the way.

Collaborating with Designers & Architects

Some of the most extraordinary landscapes featuring art are the result of a true partnership between homeowner, landscape designer, architect, and installer. We routinely collaborate with architects and landscape designers who bring a refined eye and thoughtful context to the selection and placement of artwork.

Their skill sets—ranging from spatial composition to architectural symmetry and historical reference—are essential when a piece of art becomes a focal point around which the landscape is built. At Opulands, we’re proud to translate those visions into reality, with the craftsmanship and precision required to bring it to life.

A Founder’s Passion for Art

Opulands founder Steven van Dongen developed a love for art during his travels through Europe after completing college in the Netherlands. From Renaissance gardens in Italy to sculpture parks in France and the Netherlands, he became fascinated by the way art interacts with outdoor space.

That passion deepened during the years he lived in New York City and Washington, D.C., where exposure to world-class museums and public installations further shaped his design sensibility. Today, that perspective informs the company’s approach—blending continental inspiration with California’s light, texture, and rhythm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. While we often work with clients who already have artwork in mind, we’re also happy to collaborate with art consultants, galleries, or fabricators to help you choose a piece that suits your space and personal style.
Some materials do require occasional cleaning or treatment to withstand outdoor conditions. We’ll advise you on proper care, including maintenance routines and best practices for long-term preservation.
Ideally, as early as possible. If we’re involved during the planning or architectural design stage, we can ensure optimal placement, infrastructure, and viewing angles for the artwork from both inside and outside the home.
We can do both. In many cases, we can thoughtfully integrate artwork into your current landscape. However, if the existing design doesn’t support proper scale, sightlines, or flow, we may recommend minimal redesign to ensure the piece feels intentional.

We’ve worked with a wide range—from stone, bronze, and metal to mixed media. If the piece is weather-resistant and structurally sound, we can design a custom solution to integrate it into your landscape safely and beautifully.
