The challenge
The client wanted a modernized front yard with curb appeal—without losing the cozy, welcoming feel of their home’s original architecture. Their wish list included a more defined front entry, a naturalistic planting palette, and an alternative to a traditional water-thirsty lawn.
The solution
Working in close collaboration with the homeowner, we replaced the existing lawn with a drought-tolerant groundcover, framed by climate-appropriate plantings in soft, natural layers. A bluestone walkway provides a graceful path to the entry door, bringing out the tones of the home’s exterior while offering a sense of permanence and structure.
Instead of a basic concrete pad, the driveway was reimagined with interlocking pavers, adding character and functionality while dramatically improving curb appeal. The driveway now feels like part of the landscape—not just a utilitarian space.
Though this was a smaller-scale project in terms of budget, it delivered outsized value in terms of beauty, water conservation, and environmental responsibility. The California Landscape Contractors Association recognized this project for its smart use of materials, clarity of design, and execution with minimal environmental impact.
